How do I name KNX group addresses so the import does the rest?
Step: Device Import (step 4 of 7), KNX tab. Screen guide: Device Import. The full rules for KNX engineers: .
The order
Name each group address in ETS left to right:
Floor · Room · Name · Kind · Type, then the function (On/Off, Open/Close, Stop …).
Example: FLG Guest Bed Front Sheer Curtain Open/Close → room Guest Bed, a curtain named Front Sheer, kind Sheer.
- Floor — the floor's short form, as set on Rooms (FLG, FL1, FLB). Words before the room are left out of the name.
- Room — exactly the room's name in the project. Every word of it must be there.
- Name — your words: Front, Left, Ceiling, Spots.
- Kind (curtains only) — Main, Sheer or Blackout. It sets the curtain's kind on import; Blackout sets Main. The word stays in the name. You can still change the kind in Room Devices, and a re-import never changes a kind someone already set.
- Type — one of: Light, Lamp, Dimmer, Curtain, Blind, Shade, Shutter, AC (also Jalousie, Rollo, Vorhang, Markise). It can stand anywhere in the name. It is not kept in the name, unless nothing else is left.
Good and bad
- ✓ FL1 Master Bed Ceiling Dimmer → room Master Bed, light Ceiling.
- ✗ Light 7 — no floor, no room. The row comes up red and you pick the room by hand.
Good to know
- Spaces, dashes or underscores are all fine: Front_Sheer and Front-Sheer become Front Sheer.
- If the ETS project has a password, use the XML export of the group addresses from ETS.
- Names only save work. Whether a row is a light, a curtain or an AC is still decided by its datapoint types and function words.
- The older order, room · type · name (Master Bed Curtain Main), still imports the same.
The same help is on the KNX tab itself, above the file drop area, until you press its ✕.
